Intramuros in the Morning

This past week was cut back week for me. My legs have been complaining for some rest after running relatively high-mileage the past couple of weeks. So the other day, did a nice relaxed 14.85 km run around Intramuros… the walled fortress within Manila which used to be the stronghold of the Spanish Empire in the Philippines.

former home of the Spanish Governor General to the Philippines, it now houses various government offices. It’s also one of the first buildings you’ll see upon entering Intramuros through the Anda Gate

I saw this ramp, so I decided to go up so I can get a chance to run on top of the walls…

The only problem was, I couldn’t really run because the blocks on the floor were already eroding making the surface uneven thus creating big puddles! Ended up walking this stretch…

After running around the periphery and feeling as if I’ve been transported to the past, I got jolted back to the present once I ventured into the middle areas… a bustling community thrives within Intramuros… a typical urban community! Complete with the “looban,” the cardboard type of houses, people doing their things in the street, bare-chested men with huge potbellies, a lot of kids running around the dirty, wet streets barefoot…

With this, Intramuros is indeed a microcosm of Manila, trying to hold on to its old grandeur and yet being over run by improper urbanization. I guess there’s just no escaping this, even within a walled city.

  1. Hmmm so when you got to the “looban” did the people there look at you as if you were from another planet? Looks dangerous from your description…

  2. hey PC… not really. They were busy doing their own thing… and I think sanay na sila, may mga nakasalubong din akong ibang tumatakbo. Ummm it’s probably safe to run there in the morning (may mga nagroronda na katipunero), ain’t so sure at night though 😀

  3. Hi Loonyrunner!
you take great photos and you write very well too! Hope to meet u in one of the races…soon!:)

  4. There was a walled city marathon last June 2007 organized by Intrasports and have had that opportunity to run there. The place was good although quite awkward running on cobblestones. I wonder why they didn’t organized that race this year.

Hope to run with you in the future para makasama sa mga adventures mo. Good luck then.

  5. hello!

jaimie… thanks! Hope to see you too! 😀

run unltd… sayang, missed that one! (though wasn’t into running much then) it would be nice if they could have it again. Our own version of the Great Wall Marathon in China.

Hey, if Carlos Celdran has his walking tours… we can give Wayne (SFrunner) a running tour of the city! 😀

  6. Joe, the photos are spectacular! I’ve seen pictures of the Manila Cathedral and the Baywalk areas before but you take great pics. It would be an honor to run with you guys if we had this type of run. Getting a workout and a history lesson is great. I’ll see you guys soon. We just had our first rain of the season and I loved it. Probably about .2 of rain showers but it was a blast!

  7. hi wayne! glad you like the pictures 😀 Yup, let’s squeeze a run like this in your vacation schedule 😀 see you soon!

  8. Sama ako sa historical run na yan ha. Schedule nyo in one of your easy runs para naman hindi ako maiwan heh heh …

Joe, pano mo nabibitbit ang camera mo while running? Curious lang ako. And I’m truly impressed. Ang gaganda ng pictures! Pang professional exhibition kumbaga.

  9. Nice pics you got there loony runner, are you using your camera phone here? It’s like looking at the living asia channel on foot..

  10. hi!

nora… sige sama ka, the more the merrier! We can have it as a group run 😀

I have a phone pouch that I strap in my arm… it’s available in the nike stores. It’s not water resistant though so I put my phone inside a zip lock bag to keep it dry.

sundaywarrior… yup, I just use my sony ericsson phone with VGA resolution camera. So any effects seen are because of the limitations of the camera, not because of my skills 😀

thanks guys and gals for the compliments! 😀
